sculpture;

Sculpture is a multimodal facet of my work which integrates the abstract form and the written word to create tender evocative enclosures, often serving as a respite or release of vulnerable expression for myself (and for the viewer). I began exploring sculpture during my time in a residency program at McGuffey Art Center in 2019. This initial exploration of the sculptural form was pivotal in transitioning to working predominantly in mixed-media and through cohesively using the written word paired with the visual form.

On To Bring Forth (2019), a residency exhibition at McGuffey Art Center:

Many of the sculptural works created in 2019 were developed during my time in the McGuffey Incubator residency program. With access to a larger working studio space, my work shifted into mixed-media artforms consisting of found and dried natural ephemera as the source subject. These works created a juxtaposition of sculpture and fiber art with my love of storytelling. The delicate and ephemeral pieces hope to share a personal narrative of my life experience, by combining elements of the natural world with engineered geometric structures. I was drawn to creating shapes, while exploring the fluidity and spontaneity of natural found materials.

Within this sculptural body of work, I sought to invoke a recognition of the ephemerality of what ties us to this Earth and an emotional reverence for the preciousness of being vulnerable with our intimate thoughts. I consciously explore the role of nostalgia and how a healthy dose of it can help us connect with memories of our past. With each piece, I hope to leave the viewer with an open invitation to sit within a private moment and an opportunity to engage with what makes us human.

On A Whisper in the Night (2021), a solo exhibition at Studio IX:

What does it mean to be still and silent,
To rest within ourselves and our breath,
Acknowledging the beauty that lies in uncertainty,
And giving patience to the Unknown.

A Whisper in the Night (2021) was a small exhibition of abstract, paper-cut and collage works which speak to a sense of longing for the mysteries of the not yet known or uncertain. Through detailed layers of recycled, painted paper, these works invite the viewer to get lost in a world of enchantment derived from the hidden things that lurk in the dark when we sit and quiet ourselves. The exhibition used non-linear storytelling to illustrate the potentiality of receiving what we seek by communing with the very thing we fear: uncertainty. The above invocation invites the reader to explore the duality of the self -- both soft and hard -- coexisting in communion with the unknown.

Featured are two sculptural works from the exhibition.
